Configuring the OPC Server and Verifying Connectivity

Before proceeding with the OPCIS setup, the OPC server:

1. Needs to be configured according to vendor specifications; and
2. Connectivity to the server needs to be verified.

Connectivity can be verified using the OPC server manufacturer’s OPC client or a third-party client such as the MatrikonOPC Explorer or MatrikonOPC HDA Explorer. An OPC client will allow you to view the OPC server name, the OPC identifiers, and verify that the data from the server is reliable. The OPC server and OPC identifiers are required in the OPCIS setup.

Colocation

Installing the OPC server and the OPCIS on the same computer will alleviate potential network security and configuration issues. If both programs cannot be installed on the same computer, you should at least register the OPC server’s .dll on the computer where the OPCIS is installed so that the OPCIS has access to information regarding the server, such as its class ID.
